The BMI Calculator calculates the Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on their height and weight.
What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple measurement used to assess body fat levels and determine if a person is underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese.
BMI Calculation Formula
BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated using the following formula:
BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)²
For those using imperial units:
BMI = (Weight (lb) / Height (in)²) × 703
Example Calculation
For example, if a person is 67 inches (170 cm) tall and weighs 154 lbs (70 kg), their BMI is calculated as follows:
BMI = (154 ÷ (67 × 67)) × 703 = 24.2
The Role of BMI
BMI is a widely used tool by researchers and healthcare professionals to assess whether an individual's weight is within a healthy range compared to standard body fat percentages.
BMI Classification
Based on BMI values, weight status is classified as follows:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 - 24.9: Normal weight
- 25 - 29.9: Overweight
- 30 - 34.9: Obesity Class 1
- 35 - 39.9: Obesity Class 2
- 40 and above: Obesity Class 3
